The Horster Mill is today a hydroelectric power station on the Ruhr in the Essen district of Horst. It is part of the Route of Industrial Heritage.
About 300 meters upstream from today’s power station there was a mill that was first mentioned in a document in 1319. It belonged to the Lords of Horst. They owned lands from the Meuse to the Sauerland. The mechanical engineer Franz Dinnendahl and his brother Johann were born as the sons of the miller at the Horster Mill. Today, a memorial plaque here commemorates this industrial pioneer of mining. The mill was taken over in 1840 by the Essen industrialist Friedrich Ludwig Niemann, who had a villa built nearby as a residence.
