The Bischofsmühle is located on the Honigbach opposite the so-called Klinke, where there used to be a culvert through the Landwehr called Stadthagen. This location is located a good kilometre to the south-east outside the city walls of medieval Coesfeld.
In its foundations, the Bischofsmühle is the oldest building in the Münsterland district town of Coesfeld. Its origins date back to the 12th century. However, the frequently quoted date of 1214 at the weir is an oversight; the correct number is 1714 and refers to a renovation.
