De Bischofsmühle ligt aan de Honigbach, tegenover de zogenaamde Klinke, waar vroeger een doorgang door de Landwehr, die Stadthagen werd genoemd, was. Deze locatie ligt goed een kilometer ten zuidoosten buiten de stadsmuren van het middeleeuwse Coesfeld.
In zijn fundamenten is de Bischofsmühle het oudste gebouw van de Münsterlandse Kreisstadt Coesfeld. De oorsprong dateert uit de 12e eeuw. Echter, de vaak geciteerde jaaraanduiding van 1214 bij de dam is een vergissing; het correcte cijfer is 1714 en verwijst naar een renovatie.
