Radio Herne is the local radio station for the city of Herne. It went on air in 1990 as Radio Herne 90acht and received its license from the Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia. The editor-in-chief until 2013 was Wolfgang Tatzel, who moved to Radio Vest. Since July 2013, Christine Schindler has been the editor-in-chief of the station. As part of a marketing campaign by the operating company Westfunk, the station received its new name on April 1, 2008. Since the program relaunch on January 11, 2010, the station has referred to itself simply as Radio Herne.
