The Gesamtschule Kamen is an integrated comprehensive school in Kamen in the eastern Ruhr area. Currently, the school is attended by over 1,300 students, who are taught by about 130 teachers. The upper school has a pupil population of around 300 pupils.
The school began operations in 1969. Due to the high number of pupils, a new building was erected shortly after the opening of the comprehensive school, which offered space for about 3800 pupils. Thus, the Kamen comprehensive school was the largest integrated comprehensive school in Germany. Shortly after moving into the new building, however, the school was divided into two independent comprehensive schools. The Carlo Schmid Comprehensive School and the Hermann Ehlers Comprehensive School were built, which from then on used the building jointly. After the establishment of the Fridtjof-Nansen-Realschule and the Städtische Hauptschule Kamen, the two comprehensive schools were merged again into one school. The secondary school then moved into part of the building.
