The Leopold-Hoesch-Museum was opened on 8 November 1905. It is named after the German industrialist Leopold Hoesch, the founder of the steel company Hoesch AG. The museum is housed in a richly decorated building in neo-baroque style, which was designed by the architect Georg Frentzen. During the Second World War, the building was severely damaged in a bombing raid in November 1944. During the reconstruction, the original dome on the building was omitted.
