The collecting basin in Mechernich-Eiserfey is another touristically developed structure of the Eifel water pipeline, which served the ancient water supply of the Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, the Roman Cologne.
The basin had two supply lines. The first was the channel that came from the spring areas Grüner Pütz, Kallmuth, and Urfey; the second was the pipeline that transported the water from the spring wells in the spring area "Hausener Benden" near the town of Weyer to the collecting basin. The water then flowed through a third basin opening into an outgoing channel towards Cologne. The basin was circular and had a clear diameter of 3.05 m. The bottom made of brick slabs was about 2 m below the ground surface. The walls of the basin were made of natural stone and had a thickness of 0.52 m. Inside, a water plaster was applied. The upper closure of the collecting basin was formed by rounded sandstone blocks.
