Burg Bodenheim is the oldest and only remaining noble residence of the former lordship of Kerpen-Lommersum. It is located in the eponymous village of Bodenheim, which belongs to the municipality of Weilerswist.
As early as 32,000 years ago, the fields in the surrounding area were inhabited by early humans of the Aurignac culture. Excavations starting in 1969 have uncovered the first mainland living sites of these Ice Age people in West Germany. Around the turn of the era, Bodenheim seems to have developed into a permanent settlement. The Roman road from Cologne to Trier passed through the village. A Roman settlement is evidenced by coin finds, while a Frankish settlement is primarily documented through large burial fields from the 5th to 8th centuries. At the latest, since the turn of the 1st millennium, Bodenheim belonged to the estate association of Lommersum.
