The castle, which was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, was rebuilt from 1655 to 1659. An expansion took place in 1722, which was not completed until 1761. From 1969 to 1973, Gymnich Castle was restored. As a former guesthouse of the federal government, the castle hosted well-known contemporaries such as Queen Elizabeth, Queen Silvia, King Juan Carlos I, and numerous members of the federal government. From 1998, the Irish musicians of the Kelly Family lived in the castle for several years.
