The former state castle of Lechenich, belonging to the archbishops and electors of Cologne, is now surrounded by parkland in a semicircle in the northeast corner of the old town of Lechenich. The water castle, built in the early 14th century using field fire bricks and protected by moats, was also referred to as a palace since the 16th century. The state castle was one of the most powerful castle complexes on the Rhine.
The state castle had a predecessor in the southwest of the city, which was destroyed in 1301.
