The present Max Ernst High School in Brühl is the first and oldest high school between Cologne and Bonn. Until 1961, it was also the only one in the Cologne area and remained the oldest high school even after the formation of the Rhein-Erft district in 1975.
The education system in the Rhineland only improved during the French period and the subsequent Prussian period. In Brühl, there was already a boys' school and several girls' schools with multiple classes around 1816. In 1783, still during the time of the Electorate of Cologne, a first secondary school with an elementary class and a class for preparation for higher studies was established in the monastery buildings by order of Elector Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels. In 1807, the buildings of the French-administered Brühl mayor's office in the Brühl district were allocated for the establishment of an École Secondaire Communale. It was successfully operated as a private trade school from 1812 until the death of the Cologne proprietor Caspar Schug in 1822. In 1865, a municipal higher boys' school was established again, which was expanded to a Progymnasium in 1879 and to a high school with Abitur in 1902. Until 1961, when the city of Hürth established the later Ernst Mach High School Hürth, it was the only high school of the then district of Cologne.
