Ernst Mach Gymnasium Hürth

The high school was founded in 1961. At that time, it was the first high school of a municipality in the surrounding area of Cologne, alongside the high school of the city of Brühl. The city of Frechen followed a year later. It was established as a coeducational, modern language high school with a mathematical-scientific branch. Both were innovative for that time. Initially, classes for the 74 students, including 14 girls, started in barracks at the Hermülheimer Realschule on Krankenhausstraße. The school found its permanent location in 1965 on Bonnstraße, in the newly established center of the then large municipality. The official inauguration of the new building took place on Saturday, July 23, 1966, in the presence of representatives from politics and both churches. A first extension was already carried out in 1969, as the number of students had risen sharply. In Easter 1998, the second extension was occupied south of the schoolyard. It was built to replace barracks that were demolished to make room for a new, more beautifully designed schoolyard. The inauguration of the new building took place in mid-September 1998. Due to asbestos contamination, Building E was demolished, and since the 2002/2003 school year, the newly built replacement has been in use. With the establishment of the second high school in 1974, a renaming of the school, which was previously called Gymnasium Hürth, to Gymnasium Hürth on Bonnstraße or shortly Gymnasium Bonnstraße became necessary. In June 2004, the school name was changed to Ernst-Mach-Gymnasium by resolution of the school conference and after approval by the school authority. The EMG Hürth and a school in Haar near Munich are the only schools that bear Mach's name. The tabular presentation shows the dynamics of the school's development:
