The Niehler Harbor is one of the Cologne ports for cargo handling located in Cologne-Niehl. The entrance is at the Lower Rhine at kilometer 695.8 on the left.
After the flood of December 1740, the city began the construction of the Niehler Dam between 1741 and 1745. The council of the city of Cologne decided on March 16, 1921, to establish the Niehler Harbor. In May 1922, earthworks began, and by July 1923, over 3,000 workers were engaged in the construction of the harbor. A considerable portion of them was paid through unemployment assistance. By 1925, the first partial expansion of the Niehler Harbor was completed, and the forebank received a warehouse in 1927.
During World War II, the harbor was completely destroyed by aerial attacks. By 1948, quay walls and some handling facilities were back in operation. The pre-war state was restored in 1957.
