Gymnasium Essen-Werden

The Gymnasium Essen-Werden is a municipal grammar school in the city of Essen in the district of Werden. The grammar school teaches in the lower and upper secondary levels and offers dance as an Abitur subject.

The grammar school goes back to the monastery school, which St. Liudger founded in 799 to train young priests there. Although no written testimonies have survived, this is very likely, since it belonged to the rules of the Order of St. Benedict. In the 16th century, under Abbot Heinrich Dücker, the school became a full grammar school with a seminary, so that the novices could study in Werden until they were ordained priests. The Latin school of the abbey made it possible to study at a university. After secularization in 1803, it passed into the care of the Prussian state and became a "higher Catholic rectorate school". At the same time, a Protestant school was founded. In 1906, the Protestant and Catholic schools were merged and transferred to the city of Werden. Due to the floods in Western and Central Europe in 2021, the building technology, which is located in the basement of the main building, was completely destroyed, the damage caused is estimated at 1 million euros. A repair is to be carried out before the start of school, but the heating remains broken for the time being.
