The RheinRuhrZentrum was one of the first covered shopping centers in Germany when it opened in 1973. It is located in the east of Mülheim an der Ruhr at the border with Essen and today has approximately 79,000 square meters of retail space.
The 200,000 square meter site was used until 1929 by the Humboldt mine of the Mülheim Mining Association. After that, it served as a coal transshipment facility.
