The Essen-Altendorf station was a railway station for passenger traffic in Altendorf from 1874 until 1960, which has been a district of Essen since 1901. Another platform served as a transshipment point for the adjacent slaughterhouse on Holdenweg.
The station, named Altendorf, was opened on October 15, 1874, and was located on a section of the former railway line Osterath–Dortmund Süd of the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft that began operation that year. It was the third west-east connection through the Ruhr area. West of the station, a connecting line towards the north to Borbeck diverged from 1912 to the railway line Mülheim-Heißen–Oberhausen-Osterfeld Nord. It was double-tracked from the very beginning, with the direction track from Borbeck being routed without crossings via a bridge over the Osterath–Dortmund Süd railway line, running along an embankment south of the platforms, and being integrated into the Dortmund line in the eastern part of the station. Passenger traffic began on the branch line to Borbeck, built in 1912, in June 1925 and was discontinued in May 1950.
