Description

The Mineralien-Museum Essen-Kupferdreh was established in 1984 as a cooperative project between the Kupferdreh citizenship association and the then Ruhrlandmuseum, now known as the Ruhr Museum, in the Essen district of Kupferdreh.

In spring 1982, Kupferdreher citizen Oswald Hänisch offered his extensive private mineral collection to the Protestant community for takeover. However, he stipulated as a condition that this collection be publicly exhibited and made accessible to schools and universities. The presbytery was unable to realize this and turned to the local heritage and citizen association, the Kupferdreh citizenship association. The board of the citizenship association negotiated with the help of various city councilors and the chief city director of the city of Essen with the management of the then Ruhrlandmuseum. This led to what is probably a unique cooperative project in Germany. The citizenship association provided the collection, which had since been taken over by notarial contract, and the Ruhrlandmuseum combined the exhibition with its mineralogical and geological collection. The ceremonial inauguration took place on July 29, 1984. The citizenship association also continues to run a working group to this day, where board members volunteer to take care of the building of the Mineralien-Museum. The management and maintenance are the responsibility of the current Ruhr Museum. Ulrike Stottrop led the Mineralien-Museum until July 31, 2019. Since August 1, 2019, Dr. Achim G. Reisdorf has been fulfilling this function.
