After the First World War, Jean Klein decided to found a local history museum in Goch. As a foundation, he made available his collection of furniture, household goods and paintings. At the same time, he also contributed extensive written material about people in the city, as well as about events from the Napoleonic campaign and its effects on the Lower Rhine. Thus, in 1920, the first local history museum was established in the Steintor.
After the extensive destruction of the city in 1945, the museum and its remaining holdings were reopened in 1956 on the same site.
