The lordship of Schönau was transferred as property to Heinrich von Aachen by Emperor Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire in 1244. Heinrich of Aachen, the chamberlain of Aachen, granted the holdings to the Von Schönau family, who, after acquiring the castle and the Schönforst area in the first half of the 14th century, also called themselves Von Schönforst.
