Haus Overbach is a Rhenish water castle in the Jülicher district of Barmen. The building complex is today owned by the religious community of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. The buildings are partly used as administrative buildings of the order, as a monastery, and also for a school facility.
The first documented mention of Haus Overbach as a knight's seat can be found in the year 1341 in a document by Johannes de Overbach. Already in 1334, a Heinrich von Overbach was documented as the steward of Count Wilhelm of Jülich. In 1415, the estate Overbach consisted of a total of 61 acres of land. Around the year 1450, the family Grein von Aldenhoven owned the estate. The cellars in the manor house date from this time. At the end of the 15th century, Maria von Reuschenberg, née Grein, inherited the house and thus brought it into the possession of the Reuschenberg family. Only around 1630 did the noble seat come into the possession of Johanna Adolpha von Cortenbach as part of an inheritance. However, since Johanna Adolpha was married to Wilhelm Heinrich von Hatzfeld-Wildenburg, Overbach de facto initially came into the possession of the von Hatzfeld-Wildenburg family. The Hatzfeld family transferred their possessions more to southern Germany and used the old knightly seat as collateral. Eventually, Overbach was sold to the tenant Franz Josef Hons, who sold the estate profitably to Baron Reiner von Overschie-Wisbecq in 1792. The old buildings were immediately demolished and replaced by a new building complex.
