In the municipality of Viersen, there were a total of 18 mills in the earlier centuries. Of these, four were horse oil mills, functioning as hammer mills. These were powered by horse power. Furthermore, there were two windmills, the Hoser and Hüsterfeld windmills, both of which were privately owned.
In contrast, the situation was different for the water mills. The St. Gereon Monastery in Cologne owned the lordship of Viersen and thus the water rights over the streams in Viersen. The establishment of water mills required its approval. The monastery granted mill rights as hereditary fiefs and received an annual feudal rent from them. This had to be delivered to the St. Remigius parish. These records indicate that there were already twelve water mills in Viersen in 1246. All mills, except for the monastery mill, paid an annual sum of malt as rent. There was no obligation to use a specific mill in the Herrlichkeit Viersen. All farmers could have their grain milled wherever they wanted.
