Castle Alt Krickenbeck

The Alt Krickenbeck Castle, also known as the old Borch or Alt-Krickenbeck, is a disappeared water castle on the western bank of the Nette River south of the Leuther Mill in the area of the Nettetal district of Leuth in the Viersen district of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Burg Kriekenbeck or Krickenbecke was a knight's seat that at least temporarily belonged to the noble family of the Flamenses, founders of the counties of Gelderland and Cleves. The first documented owner of the water castle was Heinrich in 1104, the younger son of Count Gerhard II of Wassenberg, who was Count of Krickenbeck from 1096 to 1118. His family is counted among the old dynastic families, although their traces blur around the middle or end of the 12th century and are not yet fully verifiable. The next verifiable count at the castle was Reginar of Krickenbeck. In the second half of the 12th century, under Archbishop Philipp I of Heinsberg, Krickenbeck became a fief of the Cologne archbishopric, as the archbishopric acquired many areas along the Lower Rhine at that time and then granted them as fiefs.
