The Rudolf Virchow Hospital in the Berlin district of Wedding was built as a municipal hospital from 1899 to 1906 based on a design by Ludwig Hoffmann in pavilion style. The listed building originally contained fifty freestanding structures and was conceived as a garden city. Through war damage and new constructions, the hospital underwent significant changes. Since April 1, 1995, the hospital has been part of the Charité and bears the official name Charité Campus Virchow-Klinikum.
Due to the rapidly growing population in the industrially shaped northwestern part of Berlin, there arose the necessity to establish a fourth large municipal hospital there. After Moabit, Wedding, and Gesundbrunnen were incorporated in 1861, the population had more than doubled from 826,000 in 1871 to 1,888,000 in 1900. At the turn of the century, there were only three municipal hospitals in Berlin: the hospital opened in Friedrichshain in 1874, the Moabit hospital, opened in 1875, and the Am Urban hospital, which went into operation in 1890. Additionally, the magistrate used 300 beds at the Charité and further referred the population to confessional hospitals like the St. Hedwig Hospital founded in 1846 on Große Hamburger Straße.
