The Brandenburg City Lock is a lock in the city canal in Brandenburg an der Havel. While predecessor buildings of the city lock managed the locks of cargo shipping through the city of Brandenburg, the current structure is a pure pleasure boat lock.
Even in the Middle Ages, the Havel was an important transport route for bulk goods. Shipping was of great importance, as it was the only way to transport large cargoes. In the middle of the 13th century, several mill dams began to be built in the area of the city of Brandenburg in the branched Havel arms. This led to conflicts with shipping, as the paths were blocked. In this context, an old arm of the Havel, the Flutgraben, today Jakobsgraben, was first developed into a new shipping route outside the city in 1321. The barrage was overcome by means of an old weir with a wooden channel. This shipping route was used until around 1550. In the middle of the 16th century, the former defensive ditch around the new town was expanded like a canal and a wooden boiler lock was built in the area of the Steintor tower, the first predecessor of the city lock. This lock had a chamber length of 69.00 metres, a chamber width of 38.60 metres and gate widths of 7.89 metres at the upper gate and 7.20 metres at the lower gate. This wooden lock structure was used for almost four centuries until it was decommissioned in 1920 and was renovated several times.
