Suburban lock Brandenburg

The Brandenburg suburb lock is a two-chamber lock in the Lower Havel Waterway in Brandenburg an der Havel. While previous constructions of the city lock managed the passage of commercial shipping through the city of Brandenburg, the current city lock is purely a sport boat lock, while commercial shipping is handled via the suburb lock.
Already in the Middle Ages, the Havel was an important transport route for bulk goods. Shipping was of great significance, as it was the only means of transporting large loads. In the mid-13th century, efforts began to construct several mill weirs in the branched arms of the Havel in the area of the city of Brandenburg. This led to conflicts with navigation, as pathways were blocked. In this context, an old arm of the Havel, the flood ditch, now known as Jakobsgraben, was developed into a new shipping route outside the city in 1321. The dam stage was overcome using an old weir with a wooden channel. This shipping route was used until around 1550. In the mid-16th century, the former weir ditch around the new town was expanded in a channel-like manner, and a wooden kettle lock, the first predecessor of the Brandenburg city lock, was built in the area of the Steintorturm. This wooden lock structure was used for almost four centuries until its decommissioning in 1920 and was renewed several times. With industrialization and the increase in commercial shipping, the lock reached the limit of its capacity in 1870. In that year alone, 12,779 barges were locked. Due to the resulting significant waiting times and increasing ship sizes, a new lock, the Brandenburg suburb lock, was constructed between 1881 and 1883 in the Krakow suburb east of the city. The dimensions were chamber length 67.00 meters, chamber width 16.60 meters, and gate width 8.40 meters.
