The village of Protzen is a district of the municipality of Fehrbellin with about 500 inhabitants. It lies on the northern edge of the Rhinluch, south of the Ruppiner Plateau. To the east of the village runs the A 24, which can be reached via the approximately four kilometer distant interchange Neuruppin-Süd.
Protzen is a street village of Slavic origin and was first mentioned as a parish village in 1324. The place name is said to derive from the Slavic word meaning "place where millet grows." The village with its field stone church lies on the pilgrimage route from Berlin to Wilsnack. Around 1490, Protzen was part of the mainly imperial immediate rule of Ruppin under the territorial lordship of the Counts of Lindow-Ruppin.
