The Kleinmachnow lock facility is the most prominent structure of the Brandenburg-Berlin Teltow Canal. It is a tourist attraction and is protected as a historical monument. The foundation stone of the ship lock was laid in 1901, and five years later, in 1906, it was ceremonially opened by Emperor Wilhelm II.
The double lock, along with the freeflow channel in its central wall and the north lock from 1940, forms the Kleinmachnow canal step, with the so-called south chamber having been out of operation since World War II. The Berlin Water and Shipping Authority is responsible for its operation and maintenance.
