The Jewish cemetery of Spandau is an old burial site of the Jewish residents of Spandau, first mentioned in documents in 1324. The designation "Kiewer" is most likely related to the Hebrew and Yiddish word קבר kejwer.
It was a place provided by the city of Spandau outside the city walls for the Jews. They had to pay a fee of one shock and 13 groats for its use, as well as a burial fee and a toll for their deceased. Today, a field called Hasenmark northwest of the old town of Spandau is considered the exact location of the burial site. For a long time – documented to be at least between 1436 and 1442 – the Spandau Jewish cemetery also served as a burial site for the Berlin Jews.
