The Oranienburg Canal in the federal state of Brandenburg was constructed from 1832 to 1837 as an artificial arm of the Havel due to difficult shipping conditions below the Oranienburg mills. It branches off from the Friedrichsthaler Havel above the former Neumühl Castle and bypasses the city area of Oranienburg to the west until it flows into the Oranienburger Havel between Pinnow and Borgsdorf. North of Oranienburg, it crosses the older Ruppiner Canal at Friedenthal, creating the Oranienburg canal junction. Two locks were built along the course of the canal. The lock in the northern section in Sachsenhausen is now out of operation and serves merely as a weir. In contrast, the Pinnow lock in the southern section is still in operation.
With the completion of the major shipping route Berlin-Stettin in 1914, the majority of commercial shipping to and from the Oder and upper Havel took place via this canal. Since the destruction or abandonment of the locks in the northern section of the canal, shipping traffic in this direction has completely ceased. Today, the Oranienburg Canal only represents the connection between the Ruppiner Canal and the Havel-Oder waterway. The southern section of the canal is almost exclusively used by sports boats that travel to and from the Ruppiner waters in the summer. The northern section up to the former lock in Sachsenhausen is scarcely used. The canal has a bottom width of 9.42 meters and a minimum water depth of 1.41 m. According to the development concept of the city of Oranienburg, the restoration of the northern section from the lock in Sachsenhausen to the canal junction is planned.
