The "Hohenzollern" briquette factory was located in the north-east of the spa town of Bad Liebenwerda in southern Brandenburg. It was built from 1889 to 1890 under the direction of the entrepreneur Carl Schwabach, who is also considered one of the founders of the regional lignite industry.
The structure and layout of the surviving buildings are similar to those of the briquette factory in Beutersitz, a few kilometres away. The factory was put into operation in May 1890. It was equipped with lignite from the underground mine "Daniel" in Rothstein via a cable car about 6.5 kilometers long, powered by a 23 hp steam engine.
