The Rangsdorfer See is a natural lake located south of Berlin in the district of Teltow-Fläming. It is the centerpiece of the Rangsdorfer See nature reserve. The lake is a popular water sports area in summer and also for ice sailing and other ice sports in winter. The Rangsdorfer See has a declining water level and is at risk of completely drying out in the next 150 years. Usage restrictions are expected to be in place in 50 to 70 years. A non-profit association has been founded to save the Rangsdorfer See. In 2008, the Teltow-Fläming district council unanimously accepted a proposal to restore the five major lakes in the district: the Rangsdorfer See, the Mellensee, the Großer Wünsdorfer See, the Blankensee, and the Siethener See over the next 30 years.
The Rangsdorfer See is located approximately ten kilometers in a straight line from the southern city limits of Berlin. Its extent is about four kilometers in a north-south direction and two kilometers in an east-west direction. It lies immediately west of the town of Rangsdorf and south of the town of Jühnsdorf. The only larger tributary is the Glasowbach, which flows into the Krumme Lanke in the north of the lake. Through the Krumme Lanke, it had a connection to the former Blankenfelder See. The lake has an area of 272 hectares, an average depth of only 1.5 meters, with a maximum depth of 2.5 meters. The water level is on average at 36.1 meters. The Zülow Canal is the only outlet that connects the lake to the Dahme River via the Notte Canal at Königs Wusterhausen. The lake is accessible via the Rangsdorf train station and the Rangsdorf junction of the A10 motorway.
