The Amt of Liebenwalde was an electoral office of Brandenburg, later an office of the Prussian royal domain, with its headquarters in the town of Liebenwalde. The Amt was formed in 1485 from parts of the former bailiwick of Liebenwalde. In 1749, part of the Amt was split under the name of Amt Grimnitz. In 1819, a few villages were added from the dissolved Amt of Friedrichsthal, and in 1829 a few villages from the dissolved Amt of Mühlenbeck. The Amt of Liebenwalde was dissolved in 1872.
Today, the district is divided between the towns of Liebenwalde and Oranienburg in the Oberhavel district and the municipalities of Schorfheide, Wandlitz and Marienwerder in the Barnim district. The parts of the administrative area that had been separated in 1749/56 now belong to Joachimsthal.
