The Röntgental excavation site is a nature reserve belonging to the Zepernick district of the municipality of Panketal in Brandenburg. The 24.84 ha wetland, located on the northeastern edge of Berlin, was created from an artificial depression left after sand extraction for embankment construction during the building of the Berlin S-Bahn in the years 1892–95, right near the Röntgental S-Bahn station and the Berlin-Stettin railway line. Rare plant species soon settled in the excavated area, justifying the initial protection of the area in 1940. In the following decades, the site became increasingly marshy, and the rare species were displaced, leading to the revocation of its nature conservation status in 1972. A renewed designation as a nature reserve occurred in 1986 by the Bernau district council and – still valid today – on March 14, 1990, according to decision No. 130 of the Frankfurt district assembly.
The Röntgental excavation site is located north of the Berlin-Stettin railway line, in direct proximity to the Röntgental S-Bahn station. It borders to the west with the district of Berlin-Buch, which is part of the Berlin district of Pankow. To the north stretch the former sewage fields of the Berlin state estate Hobrechtsfelde, which have been renatured and reforested since the 1980s. To the east, the area is limited by residential areas of the Zepernick district of Panketal, particularly the Röntgental residential area. Neighboring properties also include the site of the former reception center and a community garden. A beech avenue runs through the nature reserve, designated only as a foot and bike path here, which in the early 20th century could still be recognized by its then colloquial name Heerweg as a part of the medieval Uckermark Heerweg.
