Bunker Complex 5000

The bunkers of "Complex 5000," internally referred to as "Investment Complex 17," were part of a military investment program aimed at systematically increasing the defensive capabilities of the Ministry of National Defense of the GDR, which was closely related to the order No. 10/73 of the MfS from February 5, 1973. All measures under this order to maintain the confidentiality of the investment program were carried out under the code name 'Filigran'. The structures were commissioned by the National Defense Council of the GDR and were meant to ensure protection for the leadership and communication with the military and the allied forces of the Warsaw Pact in case of crises and war.
“Pearl” was the code name for the bunker facility in Prenden, constructed on three levels underground along Ützdorfer Straße, between the Stromberge and the Bogensee. Built between 1978 and 1983, the bunker covers more than 7,500 m² and is one of the largest and most well-known underground protective structures in the former GDR. The facility, officially called Special Structure 17/5001, was considered a technical masterpiece and, at its commissioning in 1983, was likely the most elaborate construction of its kind in the entire Eastern Bloc.
