The names of the lake are also Stadtsee and Templiner See. It is not to be confused with Lake Templin, which is located near Potsdam. As part of the Templin waters, the lake is navigable and can be reached via the Templin lock from the Havel.
The elongated lake is located east of Templin. It has an area of 87 hectares, is almost 2.5 kilometres long and about 650 metres wide at its widest point. The maximum depth is 9 meters. The limestone-rich, unstratified lake has a relatively large catchment area of 24,093 hectares. Its volume is 5,047,653 m³. The inflow of the lake is from the Bruchsee at the eastern end of the lake. The drainage takes place via the Templiner Canal to the west.
