The Baruther Glashütte museum village is a technical monument in the south of the Teltow-Fläming district in Brandenburg. The museum deals with the social and technical history of the old glassmaker village. A glassmaker explains his craft to visitors. Another exhibition about the inventor of the thermos bottle, Reinhold Burger, is on display. In the village itself, numerous craftsmen and tradespeople have settled.
In 1715, a severe storm destroyed large forest areas in the region south of Baruth/Mark. In search of a meaningful use for the readily available fuel and raw material, a glassworks was decided upon. The potash necessary for glass production is obtained from wood ash. The planned construction of a glassworks in the north of Baruth in 1711 was not carried out due to the high wood consumption, although contracts had already been signed. Count Friedrich Sigismund of Solms-Baruth summoned the master glassmaker Bernsdorf from Lusatia to him. On March 23, 1716, the contract for the construction of a glassworks was signed. Bernsdorf was granted a sufficient piece of land. He was given the right to extract 1,000 fathoms of wood from the forest annually and was allowed to operate a potash distillery. In return, he was obligated to pay taxes to the count.
