The water tower in Königs Wusterhausen is a 33-meter high water tower on the Funkerberg in Königs Wusterhausen in the German state of Brandenburg. It served the city’s water supply from 1912 to 1965. Its integrated elevated reservoir had a capacity of 300 cubic meters of drinking water. The water tower is a listed monument.
The water tower on the Funkerberg was built between 1910 and 1912 as a tower with an observation walkway at a height of 33 meters. For its time, it represented an architectural specialty for this area and developed into a popular excursion destination. After 1945, the water tower was operated by the VEB Stadtwerke Königs Wusterhausen. Due to a lack of maintenance and hygienic deficiencies, the tower ceased its operation as a water supplier in 1965. A lack of financial resources and disinterest from the then city leadership initiated a slow but steady decline of the structure. In 1980, it was then, also at the urging of committed citizens of the city, added to the district’s monument list. This helped prevent further destruction of the tower. Until 1989, the tower was not open to the public. It was only in 1990 that financial resources were made available. Together with funds from the state, the district, and the city of Königs Wusterhausen, as well as the monument protection authority, the tower could be renovated. Since 1991, it has housed a restaurant, a gallery, and an observation platform open to the public, which can be reached after climbing a spiral staircase with 110 steps.
