Bindow is a village and a former municipality in the Dahme-Spreewald district, in Brandenburg, Germany. It consists of a horseshoe-shaped village centre and a more southerly district, Bindow-Süd, located between the river Dahme and the Ziestsee.
Bindow was settled by Slavs around the year 1000. They probably laid out the village green that stretches towards the Dahme and took care of a ford through the river. This could be a reference to the name Bindow=binding. Bindow was first mentioned in 1492. At that time, it was known as an estate under the name Byndunge. The inhabitants of the Bindow estate were mainly engaged in agriculture and fishing. In the 1920s, however, the number of inhabitants increased considerably: newcomers from Berlin discovered the location and acquired property in Bindow. The owner of the Bindow forest estate, Enckevorth, used the time, especially since his population was damaged by the pine moth, and parceled out his forest land between Dahme and Ziestsee. This is how Bindow-Süd, also known as the Bindow Settlement, came into being. Restaurants and jetties for boats were built. In the 1930s, the village still belonged to the district of Beeskow-Storkow. After the end of the Second World War and during the time of the GDR, however, the importance of tourism initially declined, but revived after the fall of the Berlin Wall. At the Ziestsee, a bathing area with a sunbathing lawn and rest areas was created. On 26 October 2003, Bindow was incorporated into the municipality of Heidesee in the course of municipal reform.
