The Kranichsberg is a 104.5 m above sea level elevation in Woltersdorf in the Oder-Spree district of Brandenburg.
On the mountain, there is a 25-meter-high observation tower operated by the Woltersdorf Beautification Association Kranichsberg e.V., which was founded in 1884. It replaced an earlier 18-meter-high tower of the association, which was built on May 13, 1886, as the Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Tower. This tower was set on fire by members of the People's Storm on April 20, 1945, and burned down completely. In 1961, a new fire watch and observation tower was constructed under the leadership of Rudolf Post, which was promoted by the magistrate of Greater Berlin, among others, due to its proximity to Berlin. Obtaining the materials required for the construction required quite a bit of skill from those involved, as the wood was to be used by the Soviet command for the construction of a microwave station. In negotiations, it was possible to obtain a total of 21 cubic meters of wood for the construction of the tower. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on October 7, 1961, and the inauguration took place on July 14, 1962. In 1976, the Ministry for State Security took over the tower, which excluded the public from then on and used it as a radio and transmission facility. A bunker was built into the lower part of the tower. With the founding of the Beautification Association on January 22, 1990, it was possible to lay the foundation for renewed public use. Four months later, the association received a usage contract from the municipality. After some modifications and expansions, it set up a tower museum there. It deals with the history of film production during the silent film era in Woltersdorf and the surrounding area under the title "When Woltersdorf Was Still Hollywood."
