Lake Geierswalde (in Upper Sorbian Lejnjanski jězor) is an artificial lake. It is mainly found in the Free State of Saxony, northwest of Hoyerswerda and partly in Brandenburg. Directly on the lake are the villages of Geierswalde and Kleinkoschen, a district of Senftenberg. It is the first lake in the future Lusatian chain that can be used for tourism, after Lake Senftenberg, which was flooded in the 1970s. For him, the remaining hole of the Koschen open-pit mine was flooded by water from the Black Elster. The last renovation work was completed in 2004. In 2006, the lake was opened. The water content of the lake is 92 million cubic meters.
The Koschen opencast mine was only operated until 1972/1973, but the shores of the future lake still need to be designed and the water quality improved. The water of this lake has an acidic character, pH of about 3.8. Lake Geierswald will one day have a water surface of 620 hectares. the Geierswalde shoreline will have a beach 2.7 kilometres long.
