Baasee

Description

The Baasee is a freshwater lake near Bad Freienwalde in the Märkisch-Oderland district of Brandenburg. The lake, which has no inflow or outflow, is located about one kilometer west of the borough of Sonnenburg.
The lake's formation dates back about 12,000 years. It was formed at the end of the Vistulian glaciation when a dead ice block remained in the glacier tongue basin during the retreat of the glacier. The lake, which is fed by precipitation and nearby springs, emerged from this block of ice. The lake is surrounded by mixed forest, which also houses a 48.20 m tall Douglas fir, planted in 1888 on the directive of forestry scientist Adam Schwappach. This tree was presented to the public on August 14, 2000, as the tallest tree in Brandenburg, as evidenced by an information panel at the Baasee. The tree has a diameter at breast height of 78 cm and a wood volume of 8.8 cubic meters. However, in 2011, a Douglas fir measuring 51.70 m was surveyed in the city forest of Lychen. Nevertheless, the Baasee features the undisputed tallest ash tree in Brandenburg, standing at 42.50 m.
