Water Tower Cottbus

The water tower in Vetschauer Straße in Cottbus was built in 1914 on behalf of the Prussian State Railways to supply steam locomotives and was decommissioned in 1955. The tower stands immediately south of the Cottbus station area and is a listed building. The elevated tank belongs to the type of "Klönne tank systems" and was built by the Dortmund steel construction company Aug. Klönne. Water towers like this one are models for the construction of numerous elevated tanks.
The tank of the tower has a capacity of 500 m³. The service water was pumped from the Spree into the 23-metre-high tank. The tower shaft was built on a circular ground plan, tapering upwards, in bricks in a truss bond and remained unplastered. The end of the tower base is a bricked cornice in a rolling layer. On the north side there is a flat entrance porch under a gable roof. The small windows are barred. The tower shaft is divided by twelve slightly protruding pilaster strips, in every second bounded field there are two vertical rectangular windows arranged on top of each other with flat-arched lintels. The transition to the water tank is designed as a stepped cornice. The perforated iron support ring between the tower shaft and the container serves to ventilate and illuminate the drip bottom.
