The estate of Madlitz was first mentioned in 1373 as Modelicz, when Margrave Otto ceded Lake Madlitz to the Diocese of Lebus. In 1551, the estate was bought by the brothers Kaspar, Bastian, and Jobst Wulffen. For 200 years, it was the property of the von Wulffen family. In 1664 - a few years after the Thirty Years' War - the brothers Adolf, Georg, and Rudolf von Wulffen were also granted fief over the village. In 1752, the Counts Finck von Finckenstein bought the estate, leaving East Prussia for the first time.
During Friedrich II's time, the village Alt-Madlitz was named to distinguish it from the Friedrichian colony Neu-Madlitz. In the 18th century, the village had only about 100 inhabitants, including a fisherman, a miller, a wheelwright, and a blacksmith. By the early 20th century, Alt Madlitz had 305 inhabitants and covered an area of 2,140 hectares.
