Rathenow Lock, also known as the Rathenow Main Lock, is a lock in a breakthrough in the course of the Lower Havel River in the town of Rathenow. It was opened to traffic on 13 April 1901 and this lock is distinguished by the sloping walls of a towing lock, which was common at the time. The useful length of the chamber is 210.60 meters, the useful width of the chamber is 10.20 meters. The width of the gate is 9.60 meters.
There are several weirs and locks in the Havel arms of the Schleusenkanal, Rathenower Havel, Wehrarm Hinterarche, Wehrarm Vorderarche, Nebenarm Hellers Loch and Stadtkanal. Taken together, they form the Rathenow Dam. The average difference in water level between upstream and downstream is one metre. A road bridge leads over the lower head of the lock. The first mention of a change in the flow of the Havel at Rathenow due to the construction of mill dams dates back to 1288. In the same year, the fossatum ipsius civitatis, the city's moat, was described for the first time. In the period from 1548 to 1559, a boiler lock was built at Rathenow, thus ensuring a continuous passage for navigation. At the same location, the city's first lock was built in 1732 as a chamber lock.
