Mattierzoll is a district of the municipality of Winnigstedt located in the district of Wolfenbüttel. Mattierzoll is situated on the B 79 halfway between Halberstadt and Wolfenbüttel directly at the state border of Lower Saxony/Saxony-Anhalt. The name of the place is derived from Mattier, a payment unit for crossing the Hessendam to Hesse at Fallstein.
For centuries, Mattierzoll has been located in the border area of various territories, particularly between the Duchy of Braunschweig and the Bishopric of Halberstadt or later Brandenburg-Prussia. In 1941, a significant border adjustment took place for the purpose of reorganizing contiguous and closed administrative districts, during which the neighboring village Hessen was transferred from Braunschweig to Prussia.
