Appenrode is located in the southern foothills of the Harz Mountains. The Ellerbach, a tributary of the Zorge, flows through the village. The area also exhibits karst phenomena typical of the Harz foothills. Therefore, the agriculturally used areas are mostly distant from groundwater. The village can be reached via the state road 2073 and district roads. The nearest train station is four kilometers away.
In 1190, the district was first mentioned in a document. After this time, the village was subject to Bischofferode and Bettlershayn. Following the Flegler War of 1412, people settled on the Haynerberg from Bettlershayn. This was also a step towards new independence. The agriculturally shaped village usually had around 450 inhabitants. They worked in agriculture, also in the nearby war industry, or mostly in mining as commuters.
