The clustered village of Höddelsen lies in the northwest of the Altmark about five kilometres northwest of Diesdorf on the Salzwedeler Dumme, a left tributary of the Jeetze, which has its source not far from the village. To the north of the village lies the 155-metre-high Preceptor Mountain. The state border with Lower Saxony runs west. The Salzwedel-Diesdorf landscape conservation area lies to the east.
Originally, Höddelsen was a circular village. It was first mentioned in 1347 as Hodelsen, when Margrave Ludwig transferred some rights of the von dem Knesebeck via the village to the Diesdorf monastery. In the land register of the Mark Brandenburg of 1375, the place is listed as Hoddelsen, which, like the mill, belongs to the Diesdorf monastery.
