The menhir is located about 2 km southwest of Morl and about 1 km north of the Saale on elevated ground. It originally stood on the old salt road between Halle and Wettin. Several stones are said to have originally stood on this road, including some nail stones. The area temporarily belonged to a military training area of the NVA. When this was dissolved in 1997, the stone was almost removed. However, it was eventually re-erected 25 m southeast of its original location. There are several burial mounds nearby: 1.7 km to the southeast, the only surviving of the original five burial mounds of Morl, and 1.9 km to the southwest, the two burial mounds of Brachwitz. 3 km southwest is another menhir: The Stone Maiden in Dölau.
The menhir consists of lignite quartzite and has partly taken on a black color due to weathering. It has a height of 140 cm, a width of 92 cm and a depth of 42 cm. It is plate-shaped and tapers at an angle towards the top.
