Parey Lock

The Parey Lock is a lock in the Parey Connecting Canal, a descent from the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Elbe, and is located in the municipality of Elbe-Parey in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The Havel and Elbe have been important traffic and transport routes since the Middle Ages at the latest. Due to the strong current in the Elbe and in order to avoid the long detour in the direction of Magdeburg via Havelberg, the construction of the Plauer Canal began after 1743. This ended at Derben in the Elbe. In order to enable the descent from the canal into the Elbe, a wooden lock, the Old Lock Parey, was first built. Furthermore, in the 19th century, the Ihle Canal was built parallel to the Elbe for shipping independent of water level and current. In further expansion, the Plauer Canal and the Ihle Canal became the Elbe-Havel Canal. Between 1888 and 1892, flood protection along the Elbe was improved and Elbe dikes were built. Furthermore, a new estuary arm was created for the canal to solve silting problems. The Old Estuary subsequently formed the Baggerelbe. In this context, the old Parey lock was replaced by a new two-chamber paddock lock about one and a half kilometres to the west in the new estuary arm.
