The village is located on the Helme directly adjacent to the federal motorways A38 and A71 as well as the former B 86 and the railway line Sangerhausen–Erfurt.
Until 2005, Oberröblingen was an independent political municipality. On October 1, 2005, it was incorporated into Sangerhausen. In a record of tithes from the Hersfeld monastery created between 881 and 899, Röblingen is first mentioned as the tithable place Rebiningi in Friesenfeld together with the other three places of the same name. Therefore, in 1981, the 1100th anniversary was celebrated in Oberröblingen. Other early mentions date from 1134, 1139, and 1155. In the years 1277 and 1279, Count Friedrich of Klettenberg issued documents in "Rebeningen." Karl Meyer speculated that this Count of Klettenberg had built a castle here, where he lived as the last of his line after selling the remnants of the County of Klettenberg and all imperial fiefs of his family to the Counts of Hohnstein, and disposing of the remaining estates and rights to the surrounding monasteries of Ilfeld, Kapelle, Kelbra, and Walkenried. Count Friedrich of Klettenberg died after 1279. By the late 13th century, the Counts of Stolberg are mentioned as the new owners of the castle. How the takeover of Oberröblingen by the Stolberg family occurred, which Karl Meyer suspects took place around 1286, is unknown. However, it is undisputed that the Stolberg family had thus firmly established themselves immediately south of Sangerhausen, which was rapidly developing into a significant mining town.
